Abstract. Literature examining the participation of youth during peace processes is limited. Previous work has often focused on youth as “peacebuilders” and agents of change or threats to peace in the post-accord period, with little emphasis on how young people participate during the negotiation : Irena Grizelj. Peacebuilding After Peace Accords: The Challenges of Violence, Truth and Youth (Rirec Project on Post-Accord Peacebuilding) (1st Edition) by Tristan Anne Borer, Professor Darby John, Siobhan Mcevoy-Levy, Siobhán Mcevoy-Levy Paperback, Pages, Published ISBN / ISBN / ISBNBook Edition: 1st Edition.

The capacities of youth and the possibility of youth leadership in preventing and resolving conflict are crucial to building sustainable peace. Peacebuilding is a long-term process of encouraging people to talk, repairing relationships, and reforming institutions. For positive change to last, everyone affected by a destructive conflict has to be involved in the process of building peace. Transforming relationships is key to putting an end to violence. Youth are subordinate to adult elites who make political decisions, sign peace accords, write history, and distribute aid. And despite being the catalysts and fighters of wars and revolutions, despite having their futures drastically altered by conflict, youth get left out of many aspects of peacebuilding.
